As with many technologies, the effects of the various uses of AI may not always be predictabl ... e from their inception. As these applications and their social impacts become clearer, appropriate responses should be made at all levels of society, following the principle of subsidiarity. Individual users, families, civil society, corporations, institutions, governments, and international organizations should work at their proper levels to ensure that AI is used for the good of all. A significant challenge and opportunity for the common good today lies in considering AI within a framework of relational intelligence, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of individuals and communities and highlights our shared responsibility for fostering the integral well-being of others. The twentieth-century philosopher Nicholas Berdyaev observed that people often blame machines for personal and social problems; however, “this only humiliates man and does not correspond to his dignity,” for “it is unworthy to transfer responsibility from man to a machine.” Only the human person can be morally responsible, and the challenges of a technological society are ultimately spiritual in nature. "The article, drawing on the Vatican document Antiqua et nova and Leo XIV’s proclamation of his intention to confront the challenge of new digital technologies, addresses the relationship between natural intelligence, notably human intelligence, and artificial intelligence. In this context, the au ... thor further discusses transhumanism and the resulting concepts of human ‘enhancement’, contrasting them with the Christian vision of the human being created in God’s image. In the central section of the text, he analyses the concepts of human, animal and artificial intelligence, emphasising the key role played by intentionality, freedom and the relational dimension in distinguishing human intelligence from AI. Using, inter alia, the distinction between noûs [contemplative mind] and mêtis [practical intelligence], the author points out that AI possesses solely functional abilities, devoid of intentionality and of reference to a sense of meaning and values. Furthermore, in light of Antiqua et nova, the author discusses the opportunities and threats associated with the use of artificial intelligence in education, medicine, economy, communication, politics, and the military, as well as the risk of technocracy and deepening inequality. The article emphasises that AI should remain a tool that serves the human being, and its development requires ethical supervision, in which Christian anthropology can be of considerable assistance." "The essay is an exposition of Antiqua et Nova (AeN), a Church document that provides philosophical, theological, and pastoral reflections and guidelines on the understanding and use of artificial intelligence (AI). It is this work’s position that AeN’s significant contribution is its emphasis o ... n the anthropological elements and preconditions for a moral and humanistic approach to AI. Building on this premise, the essay proceeds with the argument that AeN is not just a statement on the challenges of technology to humanity: social, cultural, and religious. It is also an educational philosophy that defends the indispensable humanistic elements of teaching-learning in the face of a society that co-exists and co-relates with technology. Within this framework, it is further emphasized that AI’s relevance and contributions to education in general and Catholic education in particular, may be read and approached with the appropriate ethical, philosophical, theological, and pedagogical cautions. Education as a process must not be confused with the tool (AI); the process and the tool (technology-based education) must not be privileged over the actor and subject of education (the human being). AI ought to contribute to and enhance education as a humanistic activity, one that is ethically or morally committed to the harmonization of technology with humanity. As a philosophical exposition, the work begins focusing on the document’s structure (major discussion points) and genealogical discourse (sources and authorities).
