History’s Future: EVZ Foundation Shapes Digital Culture of Remembrance

"Forward-looking EVZ projects in the spirit of Culture of Remembrance 4.0 use innovative tools and techniques at sites of remembrance and persecution to link the digital with the analog space. This can open historical layers, make the invisible visible, and appeal to new user groups. Digital exhibitions, 360-degree tours, and online educational offers have been expanding the range of services offered by many memorial sites, and not just since the pandemic. However, this also leads us to consider how these places can be rethought, and what value the analog and tangible will continue to have given the ever-growing technical possibilities. According to several MEMO studies, most respondents still prefer “traditional” information and usage channels to virtual reality. As much as the focus is on the inclusivity of digital offerings, it is also important not to produce any unintentional exclusions. This is not the only point where we are reminded that user and impact research in the field of digital memory is still in its infancy. To be able to make reliable statements and predictions, we need closer networking between research and practice." (Outlook, page 18)
